Most defensemen lose their gap not because they're slow, but because their backwards skating mechanics are inefficient. Here are the most common mistakes and how to fix them.
1
Standing Too Tall: The number one mistake. Your knees should be deeply bent with your chest over your toes. If you can see your knees past your toes, you're too upright. Lower your center of gravity and you'll gain 20% more power instantly.
2
Toe Pushing Instead of C-Cuts: Pushing off your toes creates choppy, slow strides. Focus on full C-cut extensions where your blade carves a "C" shape into the ice. This engages your glutes and quads for maximum thrust.
3
Looking Down at the Puck: Train yourself to keep your head up and read the play while skating backwards. Use peripheral vision drills: have a partner hold up numbers while you skate backwards and call them out.
4
Not Using Crossovers Backwards: Most players only use straight-back strides. Backwards crossovers are essential for lateral movement and gap control. Practice them in both directions around the faceoff circles.
5
Flat-Footed Transitions: The forward-to-backward pivot is where most goals start. Practice opening your hips and pivoting on the balls of your feet, not your heels. A good pivot takes 0.5 seconds. A bad one takes 1.5 and gives up a scoring chance.
