How to Bounce Back After a Bad Game

Every player has bad games. The difference between good players and great players is how quickly they recover mentally. Here's a proven framework for bouncing back stronger.

1
The 24-Hour Rule: Give yourself 24 hours to feel the frustration. Don't suppress it, don't dwell on it. After 24 hours, the game is done. Write down what happened, close the notebook, and move forward. This ritual creates a clean psychological break.
2
Separate Performance from Identity: A bad game does not make you a bad player. Reframe the language: instead of "I played terribly," say "I had a tough game." The first is an identity statement. The second is an event. Events pass. Identity sticks.
3
Find 3 Positives: Even in your worst game, find 3 things you did well. A good backcheck, a smart pass, winning a board battle. This isn't toxic positivity; it's building the habit of balanced self-assessment instead of catastrophizing.
4
Control the Controllables: Make a list of what you can control before the next game: sleep, nutrition, warm-up routine, effort level, attitude. Focus your energy exclusively on these items. Let go of referee calls, linemate performance, and outcomes.
5
Visualization Reset: Before your next game, spend 5 minutes visualizing your best recent performance. Feel the confidence of that game. Your brain doesn't know the difference between a memory and an imagination. Use this to overwrite the bad tape with a good one.
