One-Timer Secrets: Timing, Positioning, and Power

The one-timer is the most feared shot in hockey. It gives goalies almost no time to react. But most players never practice it properly. Here's how to make yours unstoppable.

1
Body Position is Everything: Open your hips toward the passer. Your front shoulder should point where you want the puck to go. Most missed one-timers come from closed hips, not bad hand-eye coordination.
2
Watch the Puck to Your Blade: Just like hitting a baseball, you need to see the puck all the way to contact. Resist the urge to look at the net before you've made contact. Trust your body position to aim the shot.
3
Shorten Your Backswing: A full wind-up is too slow for a one-timer. Keep your backswing to waist height maximum. The power comes from weight transfer and stick flex, not from a bigger swing.
4
Practice with a Rebounder: If you don't have a passer, use a rebounder or angled board. Shoot the puck off the board and one-time the return. This builds timing and lets you practice hundreds of reps solo.
5
The 3-Zone Drill: Have a partner pass from 3 positions: low (below the circles), mid (top of the circles), and high (blue line). Each angle requires different body positioning and timing. Master all three and you're dangerous from anywhere.
