Reading Shooters: Anticipation Over Reaction

The best goalies don't react faster. They read the play earlier. Here's how to train your anticipation so you're already in position before the shot leaves the stick.

1
Watch the Chest, Not the Puck: A shooter's chest and shoulders telegraph where the shot is going 0.3 seconds before the release. Train yourself to focus on the upper body during film review and in practice.
2
Map the Danger Zones: Study where goals are scored from in your league. Most goals come from the slot and the circles. Position yourself to take away the highest-percentage shot locations first.
3
Pre-Shot Movement: Your positioning before the shot matters more than your save technique. Track the puck carrier's angle and adjust your depth continuously. Small adjustments beat dramatic desperation saves.
4
Post-Save Recovery: After every save, immediately reset to your base position. Practice "save and recover" drills: make the save, reset feet, track the rebound, square up, all in under 1.5 seconds.
5
Film Study Habit: Review 10 minutes of opponent footage before every game. Note their go-to shooters, release points, and tendencies on the power play. Pattern recognition is a skill you can train off-ice.
