The Physics of a Perfect Wrist Shot

A great wrist shot isn't about strength. It's about weight transfer, flex point, and release timing. Understanding the physics will transform your shot accuracy within weeks.

1
Weight Transfer is Everything: 70% of shot power comes from your legs and core, not your arms. Practice shifting weight from your back foot to your front foot in one explosive motion while pulling the puck from heel to toe.
2
Use Your Stick's Flex: Load energy into the shaft by pressing down through the puck into the ice. The stick should visibly bend before release. If it's not bending, your hands are too close together or you're not pressing down enough.
3
Release Point Consistency: Film your shots from the side. Your release point should be consistently at your front hip. Early release = high shots. Late release = wide shots. Mark a spot on the ice and practice releasing at the same point 50 times.
4
Snap the Top Hand: At release, your top hand should pull back while your bottom hand pushes forward. This "snap" creates the spin that stabilizes the puck in flight and makes it harder for goalies to read.
5
Target Small, Miss Small: Never aim at "the net." Pick a specific corner: water bottle, post, crossbar gap. In practice, place targets (tennis balls, pucks on edge) in the corners and track your hit percentage.
