THE BASICS

What is mental performance coaching?

Mental performance coaching is 1-on-1 work with a mental performance coach who has played and coached at high levels. Unlike traditional therapy, it is built entirely around athletic performance. Sessions focus on the mental skills that directly impact how you play: focus, confidence, composure under pressure, and the ability to bounce back from adversity.

Every NHL, OHL, and NCAA program invests in mental performance. Research consistently shows that athletes who train their mental game perform more consistently, recover faster from mistakes, and maintain their edge through long seasons. EliteSportIQ brings that same level of support to youth, minor, and junior players.

Sessions are completely private and confidential. Your coach builds a personalized mental toolkit: visualization scripts, breathing routines, cognitive reframing techniques, and structured action plans. After each session, you get recorded exercises you can practice on your own before games and between sessions.

WHAT MENTAL COACHING COVERS
Emotional regulation

Managing frustration, anger, and anxiety during games. Learning to reset after a bad shift instead of carrying it into the next one.

Cognitive performance

Improving decision-making speed, reading plays faster, and staying focused through fatigue in the third period.

Behavioral patterns

Identifying and breaking negative habits like negative self-talk, avoidance under pressure, and overthinking.

Performance routines

Building repeatable pre-game, between-period, and pre-shift routines that trigger your optimal performance state.

WHAT YOU GET · SIX FOCUS AREAS

Skill gets you on the ice. Mental toughness keeps you there.

Here is what our coaches work on with you.

Pre-game visualization

Custom visualization scripts built for your position and role. Rehearse success mentally before every game so your body follows your brain.

Confidence rebuilding

Break scoring slumps, recover from tough games, and rebuild self-belief with structured confidence protocols backed by research.

Pressure management

Learn to use pressure as fuel instead of fighting it. Box breathing, cognitive reframing, and somatic grounding for playoffs and tryouts.

Leadership development

Learn how to lead in the room, on the bench, and on the ice. Communication, accountability, and captaincy preparation.

Mindfulness and focus

Breathing techniques, body scans, and focus routines used by pro athletes. Prevent burnout and stay sharp through tournament weekends.

Goal setting and systems

Structured development plans with weekly milestones. Measurable targets and accountability check-ins so progress is visible and trackable.

THE PROCESS · FOUR STEPS

How a session runs.

From first match to measurable progress. Four steps, completely private.

01

Get matched

Tell us what you are working on. You work with a coach whose playing and coaching career maps to your challenge.

02

Book your session

Choose a time that works. Sessions are 60 minutes, 1-on-1, over video. Completely private and confidential.

03

Work with your coach

Your coach builds a personalized mental toolkit. Visualization scripts, breathing routines, reframing techniques, and action plans.

04

Track your progress

Every session is recorded. Track your mental development over time with structured notes and milestone check-ins.

INSIDE A SESSION

What an hour looks like.

SESSION TIMELINE · 60:00
0:00-5:00
Check-in

Your coach asks how your week went, how your last game or practice felt, and whether anything specific is on your mind. This sets the tone for a focused session.

5:00-20:00
Assessment and discussion

Explore the mental challenge in depth. Your coach asks targeted questions to identify thought patterns, triggers, and beliefs that are affecting your game.

20:00-40:00
Skill building

The core of the session. Your coach teaches a specific mental skill: a visualization exercise, a breathing technique, a reframing strategy, or a pre-game routine. You practice it together in real time.

40:00-55:00
Application

Connect the mental skill to specific hockey scenarios. If you are working on pressure management, your coach walks you through applying the technique during a playoff faceoff, a breakaway, or a third-period deficit.

55:00-60:00
Action plan

Your coach assigns mental exercises to practice between sessions: a 5-minute visualization, a journaling prompt, or a pre-game checklist. Everything is written down and saved to your profile.

WHO IT’S FOR

Mental performance is not just for struggling players.

The best athletes in the world use mental coaching to stay at the top. Here is who benefits most.

Players facing tryouts

Tryout anxiety is one of the most common issues we see. Our coaches build pre-tryout visualization routines and pressure management tools so you walk in confident, not nervous.

Players in scoring slumps

Slumps are almost always mental. You are doing the right things but the results are not coming. We help you break the negative thought cycle and rebuild trust in your game.

Goalies

Goaltending is the most mentally demanding position in hockey. Rebound recovery, staying focused through quiet periods, and resetting after a goal. Our goalie-specific mental coaching addresses all of it.

Captains and leaders

Leadership is a skill, not a personality trait. Learn how to communicate, hold teammates accountable, manage conflict, and lead by example on and off the ice.

Players dealing with burnout

Lost the love for the game? Going through the motions? We help players reconnect with their purpose, set meaningful goals, and build sustainable motivation.

High-performing players

Already playing well? Mental coaching helps you stay consistent, maintain your edge over a long season, and prepare for the next level. It is a competitive advantage, not a sign of weakness.

FAQ · MENTAL PERFORMANCE

Common questions about mental performance.

Everything you need to know before your first session.

Is mental coaching only for players who are struggling?
No. Many of our highest-performing clients use mental coaching proactively. They sharpen focus before playoffs, build leadership skills for captaincy, and maintain consistency over a long season. It is a competitive edge used by athletes at every level, including the NHL.
Are the sessions completely confidential?
Yes. Everything you discuss with your coach stays between you and your coach. For minor-aged players, parents receive high-level progress updates (e.g. "working on pre-game confidence") but the specific content of sessions remains private unless the player chooses to share. This is essential for building trust and getting honest results.
How is this different from seeing a regular therapist?
Our coaches specialize exclusively in athletic performance. Sessions are built around hockey-specific scenarios: pre-game anxiety, between-shift composure, recovering from a bad goal, managing playoff pressure, communicating with teammates, and the mental demands of tryouts. A general therapist may not have the sport-specific expertise to address these effectively.
Do I need a specific problem to get started?
Not at all. Some players come to us with a clear issue like tryout anxiety or a scoring slump. Others want to build a mental toolkit before the season starts or prepare for the next level. We meet every player where they are and build a personalized plan from there.
How quickly will I notice a difference?
Most players report noticeable improvements in focus and composure within 2-3 sessions. Deeper changes like rebuilding confidence after a tough stretch, developing leadership presence, or breaking negative thought patterns typically develop over 4-8 sessions. Your coach tracks progress so improvement is measurable, not just a feeling.
Can mental coaching help with injuries and comebacks?
Absolutely. Returning from injury has a massive mental component that is often overlooked. Fear of re-injury, loss of confidence, frustration with the rehab process, and anxiety about losing your spot are all common. Our coaches help athletes navigate the psychological side of recovery so you come back mentally ready, not just physically cleared.
What age is appropriate for mental performance coaching?
We work with players aged 12 and up. For younger players (12-14), sessions are more activity-based with visualization games and breathing exercises. For older players, sessions are structured around specific competitive challenges. Our coaches adapt their approach to match maturity and needs.
Can parents or guardians be involved?
With the player's consent, parents can be included in goal-setting conversations and progress check-ins. Some families prefer a brief parent debrief after every 3-4 sessions. We are flexible. The most important thing is that the player feels comfortable and the trust between player and coach stays intact.
