You don't need a 2-hour gym session to build hockey-specific fitness. This 20-minute circuit targets the exact muscle groups and energy systems you use on the ice.
1
Lateral Bounds (3x10 each side): Stand on one foot, explode laterally to the opposite foot, stick the landing for 1 second. This builds the lateral power that drives crossovers and defensive pivots. Rest 30 seconds between sets.
2
Bulgarian Split Squats (3x8 each leg): Rear foot elevated on a bench. Drop your back knee toward the floor, drive through your front heel. Add dumbbells when bodyweight feels easy. This mimics the single-leg loading pattern of every skating stride.
3
Dead Bugs (3x12): Lie on your back, arms up, knees at 90 degrees. Extend opposite arm and leg simultaneously while pressing your lower back into the floor. This builds the core anti-rotation strength that keeps you stable through checks and battles.
4
Band Pull-Aparts (3x15): Hold a resistance band at arm's length, pull it apart until it touches your chest. Squeezing your shoulder blades builds the posterior chain that protects your shoulders and improves shot power.
5
30/30 Bike Intervals (6 rounds): 30 seconds all-out sprint on a stationary bike, 30 seconds easy spin. This replicates the work-to-rest ratio of a hockey shift and builds the anaerobic capacity that keeps your legs fresh in the 3rd period.
