Watching your own game film without a framework is like reading a textbook without knowing the subject. Here's the systematic approach our coaches use to break down game footage.
1
First Watch: Big Picture. Watch the full game at 1.5x speed without pausing. Note your overall positioning, shift length, and energy level. Are you in the right spots? Do you fade in the 3rd period? Write down 3 general observations.
2
Second Watch: Without the Puck. This is where most players fail. Watch only yourself when you DON'T have the puck. Are you supporting the play? Creating passing lanes? Getting back on defense? 80% of hockey is played without the puck.
3
Third Watch: Key Moments. Go back to turnovers, goals against, and missed opportunities. Watch at 0.5x speed. Pause at the decision point: what did you do, and what should you have done? Write specific corrections.
4
Track Your Metrics: Keep a simple spreadsheet tracking zone entries (successful/failed), shots on goal, giveaways, takeaways, and time in offensive zone. Track these across 5 games and you'll see clear patterns.
5
Share With Your Coach: Upload your film to EliteSportIQ and book a video analysis session. A coach's trained eye will catch things you can't see yourself: body positioning, timing gaps, and tactical adjustments that make an immediate difference.
